My only real disappointment with Ghidra was the lack of debugger. IDA is very expensive, particularly when you start adding the decompiler licenses.

Ghidra has a lot of really cool features that IDA Pro doesn't, such as decompiling binaries to pseudo-C code. I recommend a virtual machine running Windows XP, as more malware that you'll be able to get samples from will execute fully in an XP environment than a Win 7 environment. If you open the \Ghidra\Processors folder, select any architecture, and then go to \data\languages folder, you will see files with extensions *.slaspec, *.pspec, and some others. But, particularly for beginners, it’s not very user-friendly.

IDA Pro runs on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X and can debug a large array of specific platforms (Windows 32/64-bit, Linux 32/64-bit, OS X x86/圆4, iOS, Android, etc.).

I preferred IDA Pro, but had more experience with it so that's a potential reason why. Search for similar code: identify memory offsets or addresses in the currently selected area and ignore them when searching. It's not uncommon that you would run IDA and OllyDbg … Discuss IDA Pro vs Alternatives (圆4dbg) IDA Pro Disassembler: 3: Mar 1, 2017: Question Reason why you prefer IDA Pro over any other disassembling software. You don't have a debugger with Ghidra so you'd have to pair it with Olly/Immunity/WinDBG to do some dynamic/static analysis. Why having two shortcuts on your desktop if one is sufficient? Could you give a couple of examples of what is IDA good at that nobody else has, and vice versa Ghidra and R2 IDA: Good at c++ demangling, windows PDB parsing, strong decompiler R2: Extensible, can easily be expanded upon with plugins, community support, open source Ghidra: Decompiler support for every processor, open source, actively developed Decompilers: IDA Hex-Rays vs Ghidra. The latest version, BinDiff 6, has experimental support for the Ghidra disassembler. I used IDA pro and it was able to detect the string right away. Here's what you need to know to get started. Get your VM(s) all set up with the network access spoofed and all your tools set to filter out normal traffic. Are there any other resources you'd recommend? Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. Hex-Rays recently introduced an education license for IDA, the details for which can be found here.

IDA presents a nice graph view and the debugger is very convenient, at least when you aren't hit by anti-de/anti-dis techniques but after understanding how to patch and avoid them you should be fine. I know Practical Malware Analysis has companion files to analyze, I'm just wondering if there are more out there. To access the help, press F1 or Help on any menu item or dialog. In the end they both serve the same function, disassemble code, malicious or otherwise.

I also suggest you install tiny c compiler and write a few miniscule programs in C and then debug/reverse engineer those, so you can see the patterns that a basic Hello World makes, and an iterative loop, and even an infinite loop, and other common programming tools, like if/then/else, etc.
